Fire Rebuild & Defensible Space Handyman Work in Sonoma County

By Chad Tyler · Published April 19, 2026 · Updated April 20, 2026 · 8 min read

Sonoma County fire rebuild handyman work falls into three categories: (1) active rebuild punch list for homes under GC management, (2) defensible space hardening (metal gate posts, ember-resistant upgrades, screened vents), and (3) post-evacuation cleanup. Reference: Cal Fire — Defensible Space requirements.

Sonoma County has spent the better part of a decade rebuilding from successive fire seasons — the Tubbs Fire (2017), Kincade Fire (2019), and Glass Fire (2020) together destroyed over 7,500 structures across the county. If you live here, you've either rebuilt, helped a neighbor rebuild, or are still working through a punch list of "things we want to fix or harden before the next one."

Build & Fortify regularly takes on fire-related handyman and welding work across Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg, and the surrounding areas. This guide covers what we can handle directly, what needs a licensed contractor, and the most common fire-prep jobs we get called for.

Categories of Fire-Related Handyman Work

Most fire-related work falls into three buckets:

  1. Active rebuild punch list. A general contractor is handling the structure but you've got a bunch of small finish-work, hardware, and fitment jobs that aren't worth their daily rate.
  2. Defensible space prep. Hardening the property before the next fire season — metal screening, gate repair, fence work, ember-resistant fixes.
  3. Post-evacuation cleanup. Even if your home didn't burn, a near-miss often leaves damage from wind, ash, evacuation moves, or interrupted maintenance.

Active Rebuild Punch List Jobs

If you're in the middle of a rebuild, your GC is focused on the big stuff — framing, drywall hang, mechanicals, finish floors. Build & Fortify handles the small stuff that often falls between the cracks:

Defensible Space & Hardening Work

This is where the welding side of Build & Fortify really matters. A lot of fire-hardening upgrades involve metal:

Metal screening and venting

Cal Fire and most insurance carriers want 1/8" non-combustible mesh over attic vents, soffit vents, foundation vents, and dryer vents. Build & Fortify can install or replace mesh on existing vents, and weld custom screen frames where standard sizes don't fit.

Gate and fence repair (metal sections)

Wood fence sections that have been compromised by previous fires often get replaced with metal panels. The transition between wood and metal sections is usually where fence work gets tricky — gates sag, brackets fail, panels don't line up. We handle the welded transitions.

Custom brackets and supports

Hardening a property often means new structural metal — brackets to support hardened patio covers, supports for ember-resistant gutter screens, custom mounting hardware for outdoor sheltered storage. One-off welded brackets are a Build & Fortify specialty.

Removing burned wood and replacing with metal

Many post-fire properties have remnants of partially burned wood structures — old gates, fence posts, deck railings — that should be replaced with non-combustible materials. We can demo the wood and weld up metal replacements in a single visit.

What Needs a Licensed Contractor (Not a Handyman)

The line between handyman work and licensed contractor work matters more in fire rebuild than almost any other context. The following jobs need a licensed pro:

If a job is on this list and an insurance claim is involved, get the licensed pro. Build & Fortify can handle the punch list around the licensed work — but not the licensed work itself.

Post-Evacuation Maintenance

Even properties that didn't burn often need work after a fire season:

Working with Insurance Adjusters

For active claims, Build & Fortify can:

Because we're not the licensed structural contractor, we don't sign the master claim — but we do operate as a sub-trade or independent contractor for handyman/welding-scope items, and we work with whatever paperwork the GC or adjuster needs.
